Simon Cowell has soared up Britain's Rich List after amassing a $200 million fortune. The 'American Idol' judge is now the 700th richest person in Britain, shooting up an incredible 244 places from 944th in the annual poll compiled by Britain's Sunday Times newspaper. Simon boosted his assets by $80 million in the past 12 months, almost doubling his bank balance, due to the success of the US TV talent show and several hit programs made by his UK production company SYCO, including 'XFactor'. He also signed a staggering $40 million deal with British TV network ITV. An industry source said: "Simon Cowell is the man with the Midas touch. Not only for him but for ITV, too."He's simply the hottest and most important showbiz talent around right now."Simon, 46, has now superseded singer Robbie Williams, who he told to "get agrip" when the singer entered rehab for addiction to pain killers. The troubled star only increased his wealth by $10 million to $200 million last year after his album 'Rudebox' flopped. Sir Paul McCartney is the richest man in pop, securing him 102nd place. Other stars to make the list include David Beckham, who is the richest soccer star in the world, Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Elton John and Harry Potter writer J.K. Rowling. The number one spot is held by steel mogul Lakshmi Mittal, 56, who has amassed an amazing $38 billion. The Sunday Times Rich List forms the basis for the TV countdown 'Britain's Rich List' to be aired on ITV tonight at 9pm.Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, BRITAINS RICH LIST, GOSSIP, JAMES EDSTROM, ROBBIE WILLIAMS, SIMON COWELL

"American Idol" judge Paula Abdul reportedly threw a "diva-like" tantrum while boarding an airplane recently, telling fellow passengers she was "too famous" to stand in line. Abdul was boarding a Southwest Airlines flight from San Jose to Burbank, Calif., when she reportedly demanded to be given special treatment and board the aircraft first. Eyewitnesses claim the star pushed her way to the front of a line of waiting passengers as one disgruntled commuter shouted, "You're no Sanjaya! You have to board like everyone else."A source tells MSNBC.com's the Scoop, "She pulled a major diva trip. The other passengers were not amused. She asked to be let on the plane and seated first."Abdul's spokesman has refused to comment.Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, GOSSIP, JAMES EDSTROM, PAULA ABDUL, SIMON COWELL, SOUTHWEST AIRLINES, TANTRUM

While many may consider him vocally challenged, there is no doubt that Sanjaya Malakar is becoming the biggest obsession of Americans that is making its way into national political debate. While presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is asked if she would vote for the 'American Idol' wannabe, one of the leading newspapers, the Los Angeles Times, ponders in an editorial 'What's Saving Sanjaya?'During a radio call-in on Wokq-FM, the New York Senator was asked what the United States can do about Sanjaya, the television show's underdog who has confounded his critics by surviving deep into the voting on this season's program."That's the best question I've been asked in a long time," Clinton said. "Well, you know, people can vote for whomever they want. That's true in my election, and it's true on American Idol". Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined the national bandwagon when she appeared on NBC's 'Tonight Show' with Jay Leno, where she apologised for being late. She'd had to cast a critical vote, she explained to the late-night talk-show host. Leno said he understood democracy takes precedence, but Pelosi said it wasn't that - she had to cast a vote for 'American Idol' contestant Sanjaya Malakar.Everyone seems to have a theory about what's behind this season's Sanjaya surprise. Some say it is the teenyboppers who are in love with Sanjaya's flowing locks, while others blame shock Jock Howard Stern and other such people who are promoting Sanjaya to wreck the credibility of the program, which is watched by some 30 million people. Another conspiracy theory making round is that Indians working in call centers are flooding the phone lines in support of the 17-year-old Indian-American.The Los Angeles Times explains that Sanjaya is the lightning rod of this year's show, may be because "he's such a good sport"."Although all idol contestants must suffer public judgment with a smile, Malakar's grin seems to be that of an ingenuous, bewildered kid instead of a well-coached contestant. His flamboyance such as that surprise Trojan-helmet-like 'ponyhawk' hairstyle is tempered by a timidity rarely seen on national TV," the paper said in the editorial."Malakar may win nothing more than a hair-product endorsement. But he will have shown that even in a genre dependent on egomaniacs who display highly scripted humility, a plain old good sport can survive for a while".Whatever be the reason, the controversy is proving to be good for the TV reality show. As one TV network put it "whatever effects these things have, if any, Sanjaya is now officially the most interesting thing about 'American Idol'. He is not the best singer, the best dancer, or the most engaging personality. But Sanjaya has in some ways begun to embrace those things that people ridicule, and that makes him far more remarkable than the assortment of cardboard cutouts alongside him". This year’s “American Idol” gets closer to an end, but another contestant, Haley Scarnato, got voted off the show while Sanjaya Malakar continues to rock and roll into the hearts of America. Failing to impress the judges with her performance of disco classic “Turn the Beat Around,” the 24-year-old from San Antonio left the show saying "My life changed and it truly was a blessing and I'm very thankful." She vows to continue her career is is very happy with the chance she was given on American Idol. "The bad comments are hard, but it helps to know there are people out there who like me and support me," Scarnato added. "I'm hoping for anything to come my way. This has been a great experience with great exposure and I'm up for anything. I would love to get a record deal, it would be a dream come true," she said. In this performance, it wasn’t just the singing that was criticized by the jury, Scarnato’s outfits, which include sexy low-cut tops to short-shorts, were picked on as well. Simon Cowell implied Scarnato tried to take advantage of her looks to stay in the competition. (even know Sanjaya looks better) "I think you have a very good tactic at the moment, Haley: Wear the least amount of clothes as possible," Cowell said of her performance. Scarnato reportedly didn't speak to Cowell following her exit on Wednesday night. "I didn't go shorter. I didn't wear less clothes," Scarnato said. "... I never changed my look from Hollywood week [when] I showed my midriff a bit." She claimed in an interview she was trying to stay true to her roots: "I just tried to do the best I could do, and that was that," she said. "It hurts of course; its just legs. It's frustrating because I'm trying to perform and it was a singing competition and I thought they weren't listening to me anymore. You can't please everybody," she said in a press conference the day after her elimination. She also defended her choice to wear her skimpy outfits. "It's fun dressing up and playing the part of the theme week, and the song you are singing. With Latin week it's more of a sexier vibe," says Scarnato. "I don't think I wore less clothes than before. I think I stayed true to who I am." Post performance, Cowell commented: "You naughty little thing." Scarnato quipped she would have tried a new look on the show's upcoming country-music night. "If I was going to be here next week, I was going to wear a choir robe," Scarnato said. However, let’s not forget about Sanjaya Malakar, this season’s man of mystery who successfully managed to escape elimination, moreover, he wasn’t even voted among the bottom three. According to TMZ.com, former Idol contestant, Paris Bennett said she hopes Sanjaya will win, calling the contest a joke. "We want to see Sanjaya win because it'll kind of prove that 'American Idol' is kind of losing its taste," says Bennett, "it kinda isn't going for talent anymore and more for popularity."Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, GOSSIP, HALEY SCARNATO, JAMES EDSTROM, SANJAYA MALAKAR, SIMON COWELL

Sanjaya Malakar, whose cringe-inducing vocals on "American Idol" have launched a thousand jokes on late-night TV and millions of fiery postings on Web sites, made it through another week Wednesday. After more than 30 million votes were cast following Tuesday's performance show, fellow "Idol" performer Gina Glocksen was sent home Wednesday, reducing the field to eight. For the fourth straight week, Malakar didn't even finish in the contest's bottom three despite a performance in which he strangled and left for dead all the high notes in Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek." This week's vote guarantees the lush-haired Sanjaya - his last name has largely been lost along the way - another seven days of shelf life as a pop culture phenomenon. The buzz around "American Idol" contestant Sanjaya Malakar doesn't mean he'll win the Hollywood competition, the show's executive producer says. Ken Warwick said hype on the Internet and the radio won't affect "the vast numbers of votes we get," which aren't revealed, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday. Shock jock Howard Stern and the Web site votefortheworst.com have pushed "to get a bad contestant as far as possible," the votefortheworst Web site said. But Warwick said the "anti" vote wouldn't make up the difference between Malakar and the people ahead of or behind him in the weekly call rankings. "Say what you want about Sanjaya, he hasn't a bad voice," Warwick said. "Personally, I don't expect him to be there in the end. But it's not up to me, it's up to the public."Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, HOWARD STERN, JAMES EDSTROM, SANJAYA MALAKAR, WINNER

Flowing hair and a precious smile have their rewards. Especially if you‘re Sanjaya Malakar, who is considered one of the weakest performers on "American Idol" but has a fan base that has helped him survive multiple rounds of viewer elimination. "I think he has a career ahead of him, whether he wins or not," said Pastor Pat Wright, a gospel choir director in Seattle who has known Malakar for five years. "He‘s very handsome. That‘s most of it," she said. "He‘s a teenager, and young girls and guys really like him." Simon Cowell went so far as to say if Malakar wins, he‘ll quit. "He sings from the heart, and people who hear him can feel that heart and they become, many times, very emotional," said Wright, who has directed Malakar in her choir for at least three years. "He has not shown America what he can do. That‘s what I said to him a couple days ago. ‘I want you to give them the showmanship. I want you to give them Sanjaya‘s heart,‘" she said. Recchi introduced Malakar to Wright‘s choir, where she says his musical personality blossomed. But she agrees that her nephew hasn‘t been performing his best. Malakar‘s singing talents may pale in comparison with other finalists, but his ability to work the crowd may pull him through. Malakar‘s most recent performance of "You Really Got Me" showed the teen‘s strong stage presence, said Emmons, who has 10- and 13-year-old daughters who watch the show. Simon Cowell says he is bigger than The Boss. In an interview to be screened on CBS’s 60 Minutes program in the US on Sunday, Cowell, who is also a judge on the American Idol series, says he is worth five times more to Sony than Bruce Springsteen.“I sell more records than Bruce Springsteen, sure,” Cowell says of the 57-year-old rocker, who signed a contract that was reported to be in the neighbourhood of $100million .“I mean, in the last five years, I’ve probably sold over 100 million records. If (Springsteen) got $100 million, I should have got $500 million,” he says. Cowell says he sells all those records because he has signed “the biggest artist on the planet” – Fox network’s American Idol. “Every single ’Idol’ winner is now signed through Sony BMG,” says Cowell. “And this applies to … all the countries … we sell Idol to, which is over 30 countries.”Albums by American Idol winners and runners-up are distributed by labels within the Sony system through a deal between Clive Davis and 19 Recordings Unlimited, the label managed by American Idol creator Simon Fuller. Interviewer Anderson Cooper asks Cowell, 47, whether his deal with Sony is in the same neighbourhood as Springsteen’s.“A hundred million … that’s a great deal,” Cowell says. Was he referring to himself or Springsteen?“For him,” Cowell says, grinning. “For him it’s a good deal.” Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, JAMES EDSTROM, SIMON COWELL, SONY

Diana Ross On American Idol
American Idol contestant Brandon Rogers, who forgot the words to his song on Tuesday's ode to Diana Ross "American Idol," was eliminated in the first round of finalist voting. Rogers, a former backup singer from Los Angeles, became the first of the final twelve to be voted off the Fox network monster hit."I have no hard feelings," Rogers, 28, said on stage. "I kind of expected it." Rogers said he made a "cardinal sin" by missing some of the lyrics of the Motown classic "You Can't Hurry Love." Ascerbic judge Simon Cowell had said his performance was dull and uninspired. Sanjaya Malakar and Phil Stacey were the other two who rounded out the bottom three. The votes in the phone ballotting drew about 28 million calls and text messages. The 17-year-old Malakar, of Federal Way, Wash., has managed to keep hanging on still perplexes a lot of viewers. His rendition of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was berated by a tortured Cowell who gave the nice kid credit for being "brave." Stacey, 29, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., sang "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" and he still reminds me of the late actor Klaus Kinski on a good day. Motown diva Diana Ross, who coached all the contestants this week sang "More Today Than Yesterday," from her latest CD, "I Love You."Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, DIANA ROSS, JAMES EDSTROM, SANJAYA MALAKAR

I have never enjoyed working on a story as much as American Idol's Antonella Barba naked and nude photos scandal. She gave us something to talk about. Though Simon Cowell didn't seem to care one way or another, the show got more publicity than ever before. The wild photos made Antonella Barba a household name. We loved to talk about her and loved her toilet photos. Just as good, was the shot of her giving us the finger, like all role model American girls do. Most likely, these photos made her career, at least for now. Maybe years down the road, she will laugh at how much media these pictures got. To you Antonella, Good Luck !

Seventeen-year-old Sanjaya Malakar of Federal Way is one of 12 finalists competing for a record contract on "American Idol." The show's tense final moments Thursday night focused on Malakar and Jason "Sundance" Head, who were competing for the No. 12 spot. The judges were surprised when viewers voted Head off the show, complementing him on his singing as they showed him the door. Simon Cowell has criticized Malakar for his "weird" stage presence and his singing hasn't attracted the same kind of praise some of his competitors have received. Among the 24 semifinalists was another Federal Way contestant, 22-year-old Amy Krebs. She was voted off the show on Feb. 22.Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, JAMES EDSTROM, SANJAYA MALAKAR

Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson has hit back at "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell, comparing her experience on the talent show to working at Burger King. Hudson -- who was a contestant on the show in 2004 -- was rejected and tipped for failure by Cowell. When she went onto Oscar success through her role in "Dreamgirls," Cowell accused Hudson of failing to appreciate the "big opportunity" her appearance on the show offered her. New Jerseys own Antonella Barba of Point Pleasant learned last night that she would not be one of the show's final 12 contestants. That came one day after the show's judges had given subdued reviews to her performance of "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae. After hearing the viewers' decision, Barba became emotional as host Ryan Seacrest asked her what memories she would take with her. "So many memories, too many, I can't even think about it now," Barba said. "So many memories, but great ones." Barba had drawn intense media scrutiny over some racy pictures — purported to be of her — that were posted on the Internet last month. The publicity has helped her career though. She has offers from several video and magazine companies and she is one of the most talked about contestants American Idol has ever had.

Antonella Barba with friend Amanda Coluccio
Well I got the supprise of my life today while I was doing one of my regular Radio Gigs on Maryland's top radio station Ocean 98. The morning show "RUDE AWAKENING" with hosts Bulldog (left with James Edstrom) and Snoopy really put me to the test about www.TimesSquareGossip.Com . They were questioning me about the photos I have posted on my site of American Idol contestant Antonella Barba, asking me if they were real. I explained they were, then next thing I knew they had former American Idol contestant Amanda Coluccio, Antonella's best friend on the air with me.Labels: AMANDA COLUCCIO, AMERICAN IDOL, ANTONELLA BARBA, BULLDOG, OCEAN 98, PLAYBOY

As more naked and nude pictures of American Idols Antonella Barba surface, there talk of her posing for Playboy . Laura Saltman of Access Hollywood was at the Playboy Mansion for the party celebrating the season three premiere of the E! channel's 'The Girls Next Door', and asked for the Playboy boss's take on the Antonella Barba racy photographs online controversy. After showing Hugh Hefner the photos, he remarked, "She really looks sexy here." Asked if he would consider making Antonella an offer to pose for Playboy should she be voted off 'Idol' early, Hef answered, "Very real possibility. Yes, absolutely." But all of that is going to have to wait at least another few days as Antonella was not voted off of American idol despite predictions of her demise. The New Jersey babe is safe and survived the week two cuts. Hefner, who knows a thing or two about nudity in photos, says calls for 'American Idol' to remove the 20-year-old's saucy pictures "hypocritical and dumb." Hefner told USA Today, "I think in America we have a very strange attitude toward sexuality and nudity, and it makes no real sense." I'm about 90% sure that Playboy is seriously at work on getting the Point Pleasant Beach babe for its summer issue. It's really not complicated: She'll get booted next week, and then possibly fly to California for her Playboy shoot by the end of the month. "American Idol" fans have sent Antonella Barba to the next round of the talent contest, despite a thumbs-down from judges and Internet photos putting her at the center of the latest sex scandal to hit U.S. TV's most popular show. Barba, 20, the attractive former college student purportedly shown in various stages of undress in a batch of online pictures circulating on the Web, emerged as one of 16 finalists to make the cut on Thursday night as four fellow contestants were voted off the competition. "Idol" fans have flooded online chat rooms and blogs in recent days buzzing over whether the photos really are of Barba and whether they might get her kicked off Fox network's singing contest. "Idol" producers have shrugged off the controversy, and no mention of the scandal was made during Thursday's show. But it was not until the end of the broadcast that the fate of Barba was revealed, when host Ryan Seacrest called three women to the front of the stage to announce which one was out. Many were surprised that Barba, whose singing talents have failed to impress the show's panel of celebrity judges, made it this far. Others have said her level of talent may not be so important at this stage of the show. "If a sex tape of Antonella makes the Internet she could win this competition ... now that would be rather humorous," said entertainment news blog Bumpshack following the show. The anonymously posted Internet images include those of a young woman lying on her back covered in rose petals, posing in her underwear, sitting on a toilet and sitting among a group of topless women on a beach, hands over their breasts. Others show a woman performing oral sex on a man. Though all are purported to be pictures of Barba, none of the subjects of the photos has been positively identified. The scandal was reminiscent of the situation in 2003, when contestant Frenchie Davis whose powerhouse vocals dazzled the judges, was dismissed from the show following the discovery that she had posed topless on a porn site. Fox, a unit of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., has declined to comment on the latest scandal. But judge Simon Cowell and fellow producer Nigel Lythgoe said in separate media interviews this week that Barba's fate is up to fans who vote on the contestants. Barba, who hails from New Jersey, has kept mum about the photos. But her friend Amanda Coluccio, a fellow "American Idol" hopeful eliminated from the contest earlier this season, said that only the least graphic photos in question are authentic. Those, including the rose-petal shot, were taken for a calendar the former architecture student made for her boyfriend, Coluccio told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. The more provocative photos on the Internet are of someone else, she said. "I've studied them. It's not her nose. She's never had (acrylic nail) tips in her life. She's the least slutty person I know," Coluccio was quoted as saying. "American Idol," the most watched U.S. television series during the past four years, averaged more than 27 million viewers for Thursday night's broadcast, according to Nielsen Media Research.Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, ANTONELLA BARBA, NAKED PHOTOS, NUDE, TOILET

A close friend of "American Idol" semi-finalist Antonella Barba says that the aspiring singer is not the subject of some graphically sexual pictures purported to be of her that were posted on the Internet last week. Barba's best friend, Amanda Coluccio of Holmdel, with whom she auditioned and won a trip to Hollywood for the second round before being eliminated, told The Star-Ledger of Newark that the less graphic photos are of Barba, but denied she is pictured in the pornographic ones. Meanwhile, here in the 20-year-old's hometown, where signs abound wishing her good luck, friends and strangers alike are supporting Barba, saving their condemnation for whomever posted the pictures online. The fallout has many young people here thinking twice about posing for photos they thought were just to be shared among friends. "It's the way this town is: Everybody knows everything about their friends," said Mark Dillon, 17. "At least half the people in this town have pictures of their friends on the toilet. I've personally seen at least 20. It's only because she's on TV that they're online." Adam Bobertz, also 17, said what happened to Barba could happen to anyone. "Everyone in this town has done something stupid at one time or another," he said. Throughout Point Pleasant, a Jersey shore town of 18,177 about 60 miles north of Atlantic City, signs supporting Barba are many. They went up before the photos surfaced, and remain there, a symbol of her hometown's disdain for the commotion surrounding her. Jacqui Reid, a florist whose daughter took violin lessons from Barba, said making the photos public was a gross invasion of privacy, but one that has become a fact of life in the digital age. "Everyone has incriminating photos of one sort or another, and you never know when it's going to turn around and bite you on the you-know-what," she said. "It's a shame you can't just live your life and not have to worry about something like this becoming public. "She's this attractive, talented girl who's also intelligent and knows where she wants to go," Reid said. "I consider her a role model for my daughter". Her parents, Vincenzo and Valerie Barba, did not immediately respond to messages left on their answering machine and a letter left at their front door. A Fox publicist said the network would have no comment on the situation, and would not make any of the contestants available for interviews. Whether reporting on the latest Jack Bauer bind or Simon Cowell barb, the news teams at Fox affiliates are aces at pushing network synerge specially during sweeps. But Fox's New York City flagship, WNYW, dropped the ball last week on its American Idol tie-in. During Idol's Wednesday broadcast, a series of Fox 5 News promos breathlessly urged viewers to tune in at 10 p.m. for a report promising revealing photos of New Jersey Idol hopeful Antonella Barba. But as the newscast got under way, there was scant mention of Barba or the racy photos. It wasn't until 10:45 that anchor Rosanna Scotto said technical difficulties had scuttled the segment.Turns out Fox 5 spiked the Barba story in the name of democracy. According to a WNYW spokesperson, the station did not want to influence viewers who were still dialing and texting in their votes. (And this didn't occur to anyone before the station began plugging the story?) As for the photo which include a shot of Barba and friends topless at the beach, albeit with strategically placed hand they could be found online last week. Alas, none were available on Barba's MySpace page. With yet another News Corp. property in the mix, WNYW might've run the story and scored a cross-promotional trifecta.Labels: AMERICAN IDOL, ANTONELLA BARBA, FOX NEWS, JAMES EDSTROM, NAKED, NUDE PHOTOS, NUDE PICS

American Idol" contestant Antonella Barba , from Point Pleasant, N.J., may be in rocky waters after topless photos of her appeared on the Internet. With hands strategically placed, the young singer is shown in numerous sexy photos that don't reveal her completely in the nude, but the photos may go far enough to get booted from the show, People magazine reported. Barba's case is not the first like this that "American Idol" has seen. Season 2 finalist Frenchie Davis was thrown off the show after topless photos of her were posted on a porn Web site. Amanda Coluccio, who auditioned with Barba, ironically told People that Barba will "represent New Jersey in a classy way." The show's producer Nigel Lythgoe, told EW.com that he was unaware of the photographs. "We have really good background checks on everybody, and we deal with that every season," he said. Courtney Love has been invited to be a judge on 'American Idol'.The former Hole singer has revealed the hit TV show's executive producer Nigel Lythgoe called her last week to ask if she'd be interested in joining Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson on the judging panel. Courtney told Us Weekly magazine: "He called. He was wondering if I was interested. I thought it was kind of weird but brilliant."It is not known if Courtney will be joining the existing three judges to choose America's next singing sensation, or if Lythgoe is considering replacing Paula. Paula - known for her bitter ongoing feud with Simon - has fuelled rumors that she is battling substance abuse by appearing in a series of interviews this January where she was seen swaying and slurring her words.
