The multimillionaire founder of the racy "Girls Gone Wild" video series was indicted on tax evasion charges on Wednesday -- a day after being arrested and jailed in Florida for contempt of court. Joe Francis, 34, was indicted by a grand jury in Reno, Nevada, on charges of deducting more than $20 million in false business expenses on the 2002 and 2003 corporate income tax returns of his California-based Mantra Films Inc. and Nevada-based Sands Media Inc. Francis, who has built a $100 million business from selling videos of young women exposing their breasts, faces up to 10 years in prison and $500,000 in fines if convicted, the Department of Justice said. The indictment was returned a day after Francis was taken into custody in Panama City, Florida, for contempt of court over an outburst during negotiations on a civil lawsuit brought by seven women who said they were underage when they were filmed by his company in 2003.Francis' arrest and his indictment on tax evasion charges were the latest legal moves against the man whose videos depict drunk young women getting naked and sometimes performing sex acts on each other during spring break parties. In January, Francis was fined $500,000 in Los Angeles and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for including footage of two 17-year-old girls engaging in explicit sex acts in a 2002 video. Mantra produces about 80 "Girls Gone Wild" DVDs a year and is expanding to the United Kingdom, Australia and France. Francis last month announced he was planning a restaurant chain and a line of swimwear and casual wear under the name. Meanwhile Francis was also charged Thursday with bribing a jail guard for a bottle of water and having prescription sleeping pills in his cell, authorities said. When he learned of the new charges, Joe Francis waived his right to a bond hearing for the contempt of court charge that had led to his being jailed. Francis cried as his mother blew him a kiss while he was led from a federal court room back to his cell. "I didn't do anything," he told his parents as he was led away, The News Herald of Panama City reported. Francis, 34, was charged with bribing a public servant, three counts of possessing a controlled substance and five counts of introducing contraband - cash and drugs - into a detention facility. The charges are third-degree felonies punishable by up to five years in prison. Francis offered a jail guard $100 for a bottled water Wednesday evening, court records said. When the guard refused, Francis showed him $500, investigators said. Inmates are not allowed to have cash in the jail. When supervisors searched Francis' cell, they found 16 prescription pills, including the sleeping medication Lunesta and the anti-anxiety pill lorazepam, according to court records.Labels: GIRLS GONE WILD, GOSSIP, JAIL, JAMES EDSTROM, JOE FRANCIS

Paris Hilton could go to jail after violating her probation. The hotel heiress faces a maximum sentence of 90 days in prison if she is found guilty of driving while her license was suspended. Paris pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving and was placed on 36 months probation in January.Paris was then stopped by police on February 27 for driving without her headlights on - and discovered by officers to be driving with a suspended license. The 26-year-old star insisted she was unaware her license was suspended and she was in violation of her probation. Her spokesman Elliot Mintz said: "When Paris called me after she was pulled over, she asked if her license was suspended. If that's the case, she and I are unaware of it."However, Los Angeles' City Attorney's Office says it has evidence proving Paris was aware of her suspension. Spokesman Nick Velasquez said the other day, "We have sufficient evidence to prove that Hilton had knowledge of the suspension, and yet continued to drive."A hearing has been set for April 17, but Paris is not required to attend.Labels: DUI, ELLIOT MINTZ, JAIL, JAMES EDSTROM, PARIS HILTON, RECKLESS DRIVING

Jason Wahler was sentenced to two months in jail for punching a city worker and tow truck driver during an altercation last year. Wahler, 20, star of MTV's "The Hills" and "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County," was also ordered to attend a one-day program at the Museum of Tolerance for uttering racial slurs during the September incident, authorities said. Wahler is white. Two of the victims are black, authorities said. According to prosecutors, Wahler was traveling in a car with friends when their vehicle was blocked by a tow truck attempting to move an illegally parked car. Wahler jumped out of his vehicle and began yelling at the city worker and one of two tow truck drivers. Wahler, whose blood alcohol level was .22 percent at the time, then punched one tow operator, as well as the city worker, authorities said. One of Wahler's companions also kicked the tow operator and spit in his face, the City Attorney's office said Tuesday. Wahler pleaded no contest to one count of battery. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, and was ordered to attend anger management classes and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Wahler was arrested late Friday in Greenville, N.C., for underage drinking and resisting a public officer during a raid against a local nightclub. He was released on $1,000 bond several hours later. Police seized Paris Hilton's $190,000 Bentley after the heiress was caught driving on a suspended license, and prosecutors vowed on Wednesday to ask a judge to revoke her probation for reckless driving. Hilton's spokesman, Elliot Mintz, said his client was not aware her driving privileges had been curtailed. A court determination that Hilton violated the terms of her probation could result in the 26-year-old reality TV star being fined or even jailed for up to 90 days, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said. Hilton was pulled over on Sunset Boulevard in the city of West Hollywood at 11 p.m. on Tuesday for driving without headlights, and her luxury car was impounded when police discovered her license had been suspended, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said. The incident comes about five weeks after Hilton was sentenced to three years probation for pleading no contest -- the equivalent of a guilty plea -- to alcohol-related reckless driving stemming from a September arrest in Hollywood. "Miss Paris Hilton was driving the vehicle. After investigating her license status it was determined that she was driving on a suspended license," sheriff's spokesman Oscar Butao told Reuters. "Miss Hilton was cited for a suspended license violation and released in the field. Her 2007 blue Bentley Continental GTC was impounded," Butao said. Authorities can hold the 12-cylinder, 550-horsepower, which she bought herself for Christmas, for up to 30 days. City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan said driving on a suspended license violated the terms of her probation for the reckless driving offense. Once police present prosecutors with the citation, the City Attorney will ask a court to revoke her probation, and a hearing on the matter will be set. If the judge revokes her probation, Hilton could face penalties ranging from 90 days in jail to a new, lengthier probation sentence, fines or additional community service obligations, Mateljan said. Butao said Hilton was alone at the time of Tuesday night's traffic stop and was not tested for alcohol consumption. Hilton's spokesman, Mintz, said his client did not willfully defy the terms of her probation. "I don't believe Paris knew whether or not she was allowed to drive," Mintz told Reuters. "I don't know if that information had been clearly communicated to her. "I can assure you it is not a matter of chutzpah," he added, using the Yiddish term for unmitigated gall. He said Hilton called him from the scene to ask whether her driving privileges had been suspended. "So the only conclusion one could draw from that phone call is she didn't know."Labels: DRIVING, JAIL, PARIS HILTON, POLICE

Nicole Richie was charged Friday with misdemeanor driving under the influence. In addition to the single count, the case contains an allegation that Richie had a prior misdemeanor DUI conviction in June 2003, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said. The California vehicle code specifies that if convicted of DUI twice within 10 years, a person can be sentenced to between 90 days and a year in jail, fined between $390 and $1,000, and have driving privileges suspended. The complaint alleges Richie was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and an unspecified drug when she was arrested Dec. 11, said prosecution spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons. Arraignment was scheduled for Feb. 21 in suburban Glendale Superior Court. Richie, who starred in the TV reality show "The Simple Life" with Paris Hilton, does not have to appear because it is a misdemeanor case. Telephone messages seeking comment from Richie's publicist Nicole Perna were not immediately returned. Richie, 25, was arrested Dec. 11 after 911 callers reported her car headed the wrong way on a freeway in Burbank about 12:30 a.m. She was found alone in her SUV, stopped in a car-pool lane.Labels: DRUGS, DUI, DWI, JAIL, NICOLE RICHIE
